Tata Go

Create a learning tool that's being used and valued by over 20.000 users.

I. Project Summary

  • Tata is an English teaching center with 6 campuses in Hanoi, serving both online and offline students.
    Offline learners require
knowledge review and retention, while online learners seek communication and English-speaking practice.
The Tatago website is tailored to address these needs and establish a USP in the competitive English language teaching market.
  • We offer a learning tool that fosters enjoyable learning experiences, patience, and substantial progress in English. Additionally, we facilitate a supportive learning community where students assist each other in their English learning journey.
  • Graduates from Tata's program feedback that they communicate and use English with unwavering confidence, no need to seek further study elsewhere.

II. Role

  • My role:

    - I started as a student, a manager, a teacher, and then lead UX design here.
    - Partner in my team: Mr. Tung - CEO, Mrs. Yen - Project Manager, Mr. Hung - Frontend Developer, Mr. Bien - Backend Developer
  • My responsibilities:

    - User research
    - Craft user personas
    - Create user journey map
    - Feature architect
    - Wireframing
  • Time: 2020 - 2022
  • Tools: Figma, Adobe Premiere, Zoom, Illustrator, Miro, Loom, Whimsical

III. Problem Statement

  • At first, the Tata English website was built as a platform that helps students to review and practice following offline classes at Tata. The design of this website is dull, and the lessons are structured as "tasks", making users feel burdened during exercises on the site.
  • Students who cannot participate in offline learning will have difficulty in learning from the website because there is no mentor or teammates to answer questions, discuss or correct pronunciation for them.

IV. Design Process

A. Define Strategy & Scope

Two key personas were identified:

Both have the need for self-study in English to improve their own proficiency. They need our website to help them:

  • memorize
  • practice
  • improve
  • love learning English

After clearing out types of users and user needs, our team decided to divide the projects into 3 stages.

B. Our website

So our students learn on the website almost every day x 10-15 min per day. We need to make sure the amount of new knowledge learned in a day should be as small as possible. For ex: a maximum of 10 new words/3 grammar structures/1 listening paragraph per day so users can learn/review/test easily & effortlessly.

Our key method is guiding them from step to step. Take advantage of 4-sensory memorization skills (listening, seeing, typing / writing, speaking) to help users remember knowledge. Being "collaborative" learning with teammates/mentors and being constantly introduced to practical knowledge helps users become more and more persistent and feel the great benefits of learning English.

An example of vocabulary lesson

Door 1: Retype the word you hear - Become familiar with the sound and letters.

Door 2: Practice saying the word aloud - Standardize your pronunciation.

Door 3: Try your best to type the word you hear.

Door 4: Remember the Vietnamese meanings. Combine remembering meanings with correct pronunciation.

Door 5: Try your best to translate it into English.

Door 6: Match the audio with the corresponding English word - Audio memory challenge.

Door 7: Match the phonetic transcription with the corresponding English word - Challenge yourself to remember how to pronounce it.

Door 8: Match the eng word with its meaning - Challenge your memory for word meanings.

Door 9: Fill in the blanks with the eng word - Challenge your ability to use the word in the given context.

Door 10: The congratulation screen after students complete the exercise.

V. Conclusion & Take away

I love working in an educational environment. My teaching knowledge allowed me to design better for our users.

This project requires a lot of coordination with departments, especially with teachers who teach directly in the classroom. I also learned how to deal with backend and frontend resource constraints.‍

What makes me most happy is that this project has helped Tata breakthrough in the context of covid-19 and gain a large share of the online English training market (growing from 2 campuses to 6 campuses within a year).
